Yesterday, when I shamefully filled my bike basket with empty wine bottles, and hung the equivalent in bags upon the handlebars, I came across two young Japanese guys, collecting the cans from the dumping station.
I looked around to see if I'd been transported to Birmingham or Mexico.
Nope. It was Japan alright.
They looked at me funny, whilst I stood there, mouth agape.
When I'd collected myself, I said, 'Wow! You are way ahead of the times! Cool! How much do you get for the cans?'
They smiled and replied, '70 yen a kilo' and then went on to tell me that they collected, on average, 25 kilos each collection day.
I told them that this was awesome, that I was really impressed at the way they were making money from nothing.
Good on 'em!
